Saturday 10:00am – 1:00pm | 2:30 – 5:30pm
Sunday 9:00am – 1:00pm

Join Yoga Anatomy pioneer Leslie Kaminoff in an interactive lab that will transform your practice by re-examining asana and vinyasa in light of a basic tenet: “Healthy movement is well-distributed movement.” The most common source of movement-based injury is the opposite: too much movement from too few places, repeated too many times – something many commonly used alignment cues may unintentionally promote by putting stress on vulnerable joints. Taking a fresh look at the anatomical basis for alignment in asana practice, Leslie will challenge and re-imagine many long-held assumptions about how to make practice safe and effective.

Starting with clear, simple principles that govern musculoskeletal function, he will help you put your yoga on a solid foundation literally from the ground up and from your head down. Topics will include:

– Functional, anatomical principles of alignment
– Breath-centered cuing to achieve alignment objectives
– The relationship of bandha to support and movement
– Why instructions like “tuck your tail,” “lengthen your spine,” “square your hips” may be doing more harm than good
– The use of gazing (drishti) and imagery to foster increased neuromuscular integration
– How to teach individual modifications in a group environment

Practical modifications to familiar postures and movements, and the creative use of breath, language and imagery will be explained and practiced. Bring your mat, your practice and your questions. During Sunday’s “Case Studies and Clinical Observation Lab,” ample time will be devoted to individual concerns.
