Most of us know that the word “yoga” comes from the word “yoke” and that this word’s origin is in the Sanskrit word “jugit”. All of these words share the meaning “to join together” or “to unite”. From there, many of us draw the conclusion that the essence of yoga is a unification of our body, mind and spirit. And it is! Consider this further clarification, of the meaning, from Kundalini master Yogi Bhajan, “yoga is the union of the individual’s unit consciousness with the Infinite consciousness” – meaning the definition of a yogi is simply that person who has embodied the technology of yoga in such a way that they have totally leaned on the supreme consciousness, merging the individual consciousness with the infinite consciousness.
If you are reading this, chances are good that you have had those moments of consciousness where you have merged with the greater truth of love, beauty, kindness and compassion as the prevailing consciousness. This is what Kundalini Yoga is all about. Kundalini Yoga is an owner’s manual for human consciousness.
Kundalini Yoga is the oldest lineage still being practiced, true to form, in western yoga culture. With approximately 8,000 kriyas or sequences, this practice is vast, deep, rich and can take a lifetime to explore. At the heart of this path is the understanding that knowledge can only become embodied wisdom when you experience it with your own heart, your own soul, your own body – when it becomes your experience. This is how we learn and this is how our practice becomes real and a source to share from, a way to uplift not only ourselves but others.
