Is Everything Just Maya? [VIDEO]

Ancient philosophers have talked about the “illusion” of reality. There is even a word called “Maya” that has been coined to refer to this. Now this concept seems to get more support from the field of quantum physics. What does all this mean for us and our lives? This short video presentation provides some insights.

Pranayama for the Earth

There is no denying that one of the most important components of our yoga practice is our breath. Not just our simple, sacred ability to breathe but as well, our ability to focus on the breath, work with the breath and to control the breath. There are times on our yoga mat when the breath is everything.

So much of life is about respiration and not only do we and other animals breathe, plants breathe, indeed our planet breathes. The forests of earth are literally the lungs of earth. Taking in CO2 and giving off oxygen, it is a simple and elegant equation that makes life on this blue-green jewel possible.

Last week we were given an unprecedented opportunity to give something back to earth. To do something that isn’t about immediate gratification of human wants and desires, that doesn’t consume, consume, consume but rather replenishes. That something is as fundamental as the ability to breathe. Ecuador has given us the opportunity to step up and do the right thing. Four years ago Ecuador proposed to the international community that a fifth of its oil reserves be left in the ground- that’s right- oil undeveloped, left in the ground, for the health of the planet. In exchange, the international community was asked to contribute half of the market value of this oil to the people of Ecuador. This is an incredibly generous offer from a country with 38.3% of its population in poverty, 13% on the brink of starvation and a child malnutrition rate of 45%. And unlike some countries that come to mind (remember that awful chant of “drill, baby, drill”), the people of Ecuador think this is a great plan and are proud to be part of it. What is significant about last week is that the international community has not really stepped up and rather than give up, the people of Ecuador are turning to you and I. Previously the Yasuni-ITT trust fund that is administered by the United Nations Development Program only accepted donations of $10,000 or more. As of last week, the fund will accept donations as small as a single dollar. The fund is named for the Yasuni National Park of Ecuador as well as the Ishpingo-Tiputini-Tamboccha oil fields (ITT) that lie beneath the Yasuni National Park. Now, with this change in the ability of the fund to accept donations of any size, we all have the opportunity to give and to give what we can. Honestly, I think that making a contribution to this fund and this effort is probably the single most significant thing an individual can do right now to take action against climate change. It would certainly be the easiest.

Your contribution would not only help the planet to avoid the emission of 407 tons of CO2, it would also help preserve biodiversity (a single hectare of Yasuni has more species of trees than the whole of North America and more species of ants on a single tree than the entire British Isles). Your contribution would help respect the rights of indigenous peoples and their way of life as well. Where else can you get so much for so little?

Donating is easy, all you have to do is go to http://mdtf.undp.org/yasuni and hit the green “donate now” button.

Then share your news with your friends and family. Share this blog with anyone and everyone you can. Because no one is talking about this and our governments are not stepping up. We have less than six months to raise $60 million for Ecuadorian president Rafael Correa to know that the people of the world support his efforts.

When I think about saving this rainforest, I think also about the earth breathing. I think about how, as yoga practitioners, we know that the breath is both ours and not ours, both gross and subtle, both earthly and heavenly. I think also of how my breath is linked to the breath of the trees, the health of the earth and I have no doubt that saying no to extracting the oil from the ITT oil fields and yes to preserving the Yasuni National Park is the most important thing I can do right now. Not just for me, but for all of us, so we can breathe.

The Simple Gift of Grace

What if we all remembered that everyone is doing the best that they can? What if we brought that kind of remembrance and grace to each interaction with each person, in each moment? What would that look like? More importantly, what would that feel like?

To understand that kind of grace, take a moment and think of a situation from the recent past or impending future where your perception is that you are going to disappoint someone. Imagine telling the person how sorry you are but that, in fact, you are not going to be able to make it out to see them or meet the deadline or cover their shift or whatever the issue is. Now, imagine that instead of hearing all the ways in which that person is disappointed, inconvenienced or just plain put out instead what you hear is this: “That’s okay, I know that you are doing the best you can do.” How great does that feel? It feels like grace and what a sensation for the heart, for the mind, for the shoulders even. Not only does it feel amazing to be told this, it feels even more amazing to say that to someone. To set aside your own expectations, your own hopes and simply be with another soul and acknowledge that yes, of course they are doing the best that they can.

And, everything is going to be just fine.

Anatomy of a Pose: Virabhadrasana II (Warrior II Pose)

This pose embodies the spirit of a warrior and conveys readiness, stability, and courage.

I place Warrior II after Trikonasana because it flows better biomechanically, according to the position of the pelvis. This creates continuity in the practice. In both Trikonasana and Warrior II, the pelvis faces relatively forward. In Warriors I and III, it turns toward the front leg. The sequence used in this book illustrates a logical biomechanical progression: for example, readiness (Warrior II), preparing to launch (Warrior I), and launching forward (Warrior III). Each of the warrior poses contains elements of simultaneous movement forward and backward, as well as ascent and descent. These potential movements impart a sense of anticipation of launching energetically forward. The focus of Warrior II is to strengthen the front leg while opening the front of the pelvis and the chest. There can be a tendency to allow the chest to collapse and shift forward. Counteract this by straightening the arms and expanding the chest, expressing the inner strength and confidence that is cultivated in the pose. Build your foundation by planting the back heel firmly on the floor and extending the back arm away from the body. These actions anchor the body against the forward momentum of the pose and bring stability to the posture. If the muscles of the thigh become fatigued, partially straighten the front knee for a moment or two, and then return to the full pose. Tilt the head back slightly and gaze forward.

Basic Joint Positions

• The back foot rotates inward 30 degrees and supinates.

• The back knee extends.

• The back hip extends and externally rotates.

• The front hip and knee flex to 90 degrees.

• Both shoulders abduct and externally rotate.

• The elbows extend.

• The forearms pronate.

• The cervical spine rotates to turn the head.

Fish are jumping, and the cotton is high
Your daddy’s rich, and your ma is good looking

But till that morning, there is nothing can harm you
With your daddy and mommy standing by.”

Following a path parallel to that of Jai Uttal, Stringer moves back and forth between original pop songs performed in English and traditional Sanskrit chants, thus gently obliterating any doubt about these two forms belonging on the same record. Continuity is provided by ingenious arrangements that incorrporate a fluid mix of Eastern and Western acoustic and electric instruments – a combination of various guitars (including dobro and Hawaiian steel), dulcimer, piano, accordian, harmonium, tabla, sarangi, cello, violin, flute, trumpet, drums and a plethora of ethnic percussion and backing vocals. An accomplished record producer as well (Axiom of Choice, Suzanne Teng), Stringer has organized the diverse sounds into a sequence of elegant aural rainbows, retaining an Eastern cultural resonance even when fleshing out unabashedly pop melodies.” -Derk Richardson for Yoga Journal Magazine 2003 Preview the CD on Amazon.com.

Little Book of PranayamaThe Little Book of Yoga Breathing: Pranayama Made Easy by Scott Shaw. “Pranayama, the practice of breath control, is detailed here in an easy-to-understand and even easier-to-practise format. Professional yoga instructor Scott Shaw introduces 16 breathing exercises and shows you how to get the best benefit from each of the forms by training, refining and witnessing your breath. Try one of the calming breaths, Nadi Sudi or the Nerve Purifying Breath. Have a long day ahead with no breaks until after dinner? Allow Ujayi or the Hissing Breath to work its miracles. Here you will learn how to breathe while moving, standing and leaning and how these variations can affect your breathing practice.
