A psychological approach to yoga:Yoga from the inside out. You don’t have to be a teacher, nor even desire to become a teacher to attend this course. Your Yoga practice will reach new heights as you become more grounded and peaceful through this ancient practice.

Spend a weekend alternating between yoga theory and in-depth practice with yoga teacher and psychotherapist, Michael Stone

Studying with Michael Stone is like being in a yoga class, a meditation center and a university classroom all at the same time. This workshop involves alternating between the study of Yoga Psychology and then moving to the yoga mat to ground the reading in one's own body through meditation techniques, breathing practices and group mindfulness experiments.

Required Reading: The Inner Tradition of Yoga : A Guide to Yoga Philosophy for the Contemporary Practitioner by Michael Stone (list $18.95)
Purchase now for $18.00 plus $4.00 priority s/h

Please be advised this weekend is also Belle Chere weekend in downtown Asheville. They close off the streets and have live music and vendors. It is like a huge downtown street party. It does not affect traffic, noise or parking near the Asheville Yoga Center, but please plan accordingly, especially with lodging.

Why study Patanjali's Yoga Sutra and other ancient psychological texts? This 2nd century text offers a comprehensive and compelling description of how the mind works that elaborates upon and sometimes challenges many contemporary "western" psychological models. What is the mind? Is the mind the brain? What is suffering? How can one work with psychological and physical holding patterns? What is the goal of yoga? How do we know if practice is working? What is meant by “enlightenment in this practice? How does one integrate the physical, psychological, ethical and spiritual practices of Ashtanga Yoga? How do we integrate yoga and psychotherapy? This workshop is of interest to anyone interested in or involved with the study of how the mind works, whether you are new to yoga, an experienced teacher, or a therapist with no prior yoga experience.

This workshop will focus on the psychological aspects of yoga by integrating textual study, discussion, breathing techniques and different approaches to yoga postures.

Each day we will focus on:
(Morning) Meditation on the Breath (pranayama, dhyana): Observing the breath allows us to investigate thoughts, sensations, images and emotions, from a place of stillness. Using principles that we will study in the Yoga Sutra, we will explore techniques to still the patterning of the mind and body.

Morning and Afternoon Study:
Using primary source material (in translation) we will investigate the Yoga-Sutra of Patanjali, a 2nd C.E. text that outlines the nature and function of the mind, its relation to the body, ways of working with changing mental and physical conditions and letting go of psycho-physical patterns.

(Afternoon) Yoga Postures (asana):
Moving slowly and methodically through yoga postures, we will explore external and internal alignment principles in order to understand the subtle relationship between the breath, mind and nervous system. Asana sequences will integrate Ashtanga Vinyasa and Iyengar principles in the tradition of Krishnamacharya.

Michael Stone, M.A., is a yoga teacher and psychotherapist in private practice. His education includes academic study of comparative religion, philosophy, psychology and psychoanalysis as well as a long-term study of yoga primarily with Richard Freeman. He is a student at the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies and his research involves the relationship between Yoga Psychology, Buddhist thought, and contemporary Psychoanalysis, particularly as they relate to the psychology of mind and body. Michael lectures and leads workshops in academic, conference, clinical and yoga studio settings throughout Canada, the U.S. and Europe, and teaches asana, pranayama and meditation in the tradition of Krishnamacharya. Michael is a father and lives with his family in Toronto. Visit centreofgravity.org for more.

Join Heather in weaving these two very different styles of yoga into an integrated, balanced practice. Each workshop session begins with Yin Yoga, a quiet practice that encourages the body to open as each pose is held passively for several minutes. Yin Yoga targets the deep, dense connective tissues – the tendons, ligaments and cartilage, and activates the movement of prana through the core of the body. Transitioning into the Yang practice, we seamlessly build on the openings and presence of awareness created in the Yin. Deep breathing, heat, and intense pose sequences in the Forrest Yoga style will take you deeper while cultivating strength, flexibility and energy flow in a balanced way. Yoking these mutually supportive yoga styles will leave you feeling fully at home in your body: energized, open, powerful and graceful.

You don’t have to be a teacher, nor even desire to become a teacher to attend this course. Your Yoga practice will reach new heights as you become more grounded and peaceful through this ancient practice.

According to ancient Indian mythology, there have been four ages before now, each one characterized and then destroyed by one of the four elements: Earth, Fire, Water, and Air. The same mythology suggests that we are currently in the age of Motion, appropriately labeling this era of technology which encourages up to live faster and busier lives. There is the possibility that, like the four ages before us, we could allow ourselves to be destroyed by this Motion, this Busy-ness. OR, we can slow down and learn to surf the Motion with Mindfulness, allowing us to live fully present, awake, and aware lives in these modern times.

You will receive credit for the Asheville Yoga Center's 500 hr. program after attending this weekend.

As we move through spring and open the door to summer, our bodies are responding to the yang energy rising all around us. According to traditional Chinese medicine, Spring is the season of the Liver and Summer is the season of the Heart and Small Intestine. We will focus on all three of these areas, helping you shed unnecessary layers - mental, physical and spiritual and bring out your radiant inner self.

The 3 hour class will offer asanas, pranayama, meditation and detoxification methods to celebrate the season. Traditional Chinese medicine theory will be woven into class, as well as incorporated into handouts.

To maximize benefits from this class, it is recommended to:
1. Avoid refined sugars and junk foods for 24-48 hours prior to the workshop (alcohol, candy, etc.)
2. Start hydrating the day before by drinking 6-8 glasses of water (8 fl. oz. each).
3. Avoid or reduce caffeine consumption. (Green tea is always a good option!)

What is Rational Yoga?

Leslie’s work has been evolving a rational — non-mystical — approach to Yoga and Yoga Therapy. Leslie uses the immediate reality of human anatomy as a starting point for exploring issues of support and release, stability and freedom, space and boundaries. This process clarifies and validates much traditional wisdom while exposing many long-standing misconceptions and myths.

By relating fundamental yogic concepts to their anatomical origins, Leslie's approach resolves many doctrinal and philosophical differences between schools of Yoga.yogaanatomy.org breathingproject.org

ADVANCED YOGA AS THERAPY
Each of the four days will include asana, pranayama and meditation practices in addition to the training sessions. The training sessions will go deep into the anatomy of major therapeutic problem areas in the body and will look at precise alignment and adjustment training for yoga asanas designed to address these problems. Though the focus will mainly be on structural therapeutic problems having to do with muscles and joints, we will also look at sequencing and the role of pranayama and meditation in therapy. There will also be sessions that look at the Ayurvedic perspective including therapeutic problem assessment and an introduction to pulse diagnosis. The training will provide a healthy and valuable balance between broad perspective and closely focused training for teachers in the emerging realm of yoga therapy.

From Doug-
I focus on the yoga of 'Swatantrya,' the yoga of one's own inner expansion and awakening. Yoga concerns our own relationship to the Self from whom we came. It is deeply personal, experiential, and ultimately unmediated by any system of conceptual thought. The teachings of yoga simply provide us with the introduction to our own Self. Our philosophies provide the contemplation and focus that help us to aim more deeply into the experience. In the end, the 'breakthrough' we experience is what the Christian mystic Meister Eckhart described as the breakthrough into our own heart, where the Divine most fully dwells. This is the teaching I want to share, along with the practices and means offered by yoga to support that inward journey.
I travel nationally and internationally offering workshops and teacher trainings. I've traveled from one end of the United States to the other, and my international travels have included teacher trainings and workshops in England, India, Switzerland, Germany and Italy.
